When it first appeared in record stores way back in 1985, Chip-E’s “Like This” was one of the earliest expressions of the soon-to-be-massive Chicago house sound. It remains a stone cold classic, of course, and here gets a reissue as part of Kai Alce and DJ Spinna’s ongoing “Foundations” series. This edition features a fresh “7” edit” of the original ’85 club mix, where K-Joy’s fine vocal takes pride of place above crunchy machine drums, bold bass and spacey synthesizer lines. On the flip you’ll find the heavy and stripped-back “DDDub” version, which makes more use of the short “Like This” vocal sample spoken at the original recording sessions by none other than the Godfather of House himself, Frankie Knuckles.
